Is an Orthopedic Urgent Care Facility Right for Me?

December 10, 2021

An urgent care facility is the middle ground between your primary doctor and the ER. It is your go-to if you have a medical situation that is not serious enough to warrant an ER visit but still requires prompt intervention.

Going to an orthopedic urgent care clinic is your best bet if you have an acute injury to your muscles, bones, joints, or other connective tissues (musculoskeletal injury). This facility is staffed with experienced orthopedic surgeons and physicians who can provide you with individualized care designed to help you quickly recover and return to your normal day-to-day activities.

Below are the specific situations in which it may be appropriate to visit an orthopedic urgent care facility instead of the ER.

Sports Injuries

If you are physically active or involved in sports and you sustain any of the following injuries, you could greatly benefit from visiting an orthopedic urgent care clinic:

  • ACL sprain
  • Ankle sprain
  • Groin pull/strain
  • Jumper’s knee
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Rotator cuff injury
  • Shin splint
  • Stress fracture
  • Tennis elbow

Work-Related Injuries

Beyond treating sports-related injuries, an orthopedic urgent care facility can also help with workplace injuries, such as repetitive stress disorders, sprains and strains, and disc herniation. These injuries are common among people in high-risk jobs like construction and manufacturing or whose occupations involve lifting heavy objects and handling industrial equipment.

An orthopedic urgent care facility can provide the necessary treatment to help you return safely to work. The staff can also work with your employer and insurance carrier to facilitate your workers’ compensation claim.

Orthopedic Urgent Care Facility Vs ER

An orthopedic urgent care facility has extended operating hours and can accommodate patients without an appointment, but unlike the ER, it usually has shorter wait times. It also tends to be less expensive since it has leaner staff and less overhead to maintain.

Going to the ER is a much more appropriate option if you sustained severe trauma or a fracture or any injury that involves an open wound, deep cut, or visible deformity, as these require better pain control and extensive repair.
